John is the Executive Vice Chancellor of Duke Kunshan University. As the chief academic and operating officer, he leads this unique international joint venture in higher education, balancing the aspirations of Duke University, Wuhan University and the municipality of Kunshan (in Jiangsu province near Shanghai). Ten years young, DKU is a rapidly expanding, comprehensive, international university on a magnificent 83 acre campus that is already achieving excellent student outcomes.
From 2017 to 2023, John was the Leonard M. Miller University Chair Professor at the Unversity of Miami. Until 2022, he was dean of the University of Miami Herbert Business School and the University’s vice provost for executive education. He has been dean of three leading business schools on three continents, at London Business School and China Europe International Business School as well as in Miami. He also served as senior associate dean at Harvard Business School where he is now the Charles Edward Wilson Professor Emeritus.
He is the author, co-author or editor of 17 Harvard Business Review articles, 25 books and over 200 case studies on leading multinational corporations. He is renowned for innovations in pedagogy. During the past 35 years, his case studies have sold almost 7 million copies. His latest co-authored books are Choice Matters: How Healthcare Consumers Make Decisions and Compassionate Management of Mental Health in the Modern Workplace. John has served as a non-executive director on 12 corporate, nonprofit and public agency boards, including Aramark, easyJet, Pepsi Bottling Group, Reebok International and WPP. He is currently non-executive chairman of Global Praxis and a director of MYND.ai and Surfin Meta.
